Samsung warning to customers following data breach

Jayant Motyar | November 22, 2023

Samsung has recently issued a critical alert to its customers following a substantial data breach. This incident, identified on November 13, raises significant concerns about the safety of personal information.

Samsung discovered unauthorised access to its systems, which was executed through an application used by the company. The breach specifically targeted customers who made purchases from Samsung UK’s web store between July 1, 2019, and June 30, 2020. This unauthorised access potentially exposed sensitive personal data including names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of these customers.

Importantly, Samsung has confirmed that the breach did not compromise any financial information. Payment details, including bank and credit card information, as well as customer passwords, remain secure. This is a crucial point of relief for affected customers, as it reduces the risk of financial fraud stemming from the breach.

In response to the incident, Samsung has been proactive in communicating with its customers and clarified that the breach was confined to the UK. The recent data breach underscores the constant risk in personal data management. Samsung's swift and open response exemplifies the need for strong security measures and quick action to safeguard customer data. Organisations must prioritise data security, enforce strict protections, and conduct regular privacy training. Compliance with legal standards and a focus on security preparedness are critical. Solutions like the Horizon platform can assist in enhancing privacy practices and identifying organisational weaknesses to better protect customer information.
