US Senate Subcommittee Explores the Impact of AI in the Workplace

Lorena Caraccio | November 2, 2023

Artificial intelligence's impact on the workplace is rapidly approaching, and the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labour, and Pensions' Subcommittee on Employment and Workplace Safety recently held a hearing to explore its implications.

The focus was on how AI adoption can be used to enhance worker productivity rather than replace them. The Subcommittee is keen on using AI to provide workers with the training and skills needed to maximize AI's potential. The current workforce is not equipped to fill the jobs of the future, according to industry experts, and as such companies need to build a workforce able to support AI.

Other industry experts called for federal regulations to deal with AI in the workplace which would recognize AI as a complex, socio-technical issue and establish a “worker-centered AI social contract”. AI systems to be used in the workforce need to be designed in a “human-centred way”.

With AI, a one-size-fits-all approach to regulation will not work. Regulations seeking to regulate AI holistically will lead to industry-specific concerns going unaddressed. Workplace-specific regulation is essential. Additionally, requirements cannot be tailored only to the larger AI systems.

Lorena Caraccio, Privacy Consultant at Privacy Culture, believes the discussion on AI in the workplace is crucial for our future workforce. As AI technologies become increasingly integrated into our professional lives, it's vital to ensure that employees are not only prepared for these changes but can also leverage AI to enhance their skills and productivity. It's encouraging to see a focus on worker-centric approaches and the potential for AI to address socio-economic disparities. This worker-centric approach not only safeguards job security but also fosters a more efficient and innovative workforce. We must strike a balance with AI regulations that encourages businesses to embrace these technologies while safeguarding against potential misuse. Most importantly, the transformative power of AI in the workplace should be harnessed to address socio-economic disparities.
